Our Grade 6 Science Fair was AMAZING!

We have brilliant scientists at Metcalf!  Students experimented with ant farms, popcorn, cookies, how color fades, how quickly hot/cold water freezes, acidity, and MUCH more.  We couldn't be more proud of you all!

*Creative Arts Night on Thursday, March 31st from 5-7 in the Metcalf cafeteria! It's time to celebrate all of the "blooming" artists and musicians at Metcalf!

*Duck Stamp Awards Ceremony will take place at EWG HS on Sat. Apr. 2nd.

*Kids Choice Bowling event on Sunday, April 3rd. All students, PreK to Grade 6 are invited to bring an adult of their choice for the fun Rock n Bowl, pizza, refreshments, and raffles at Kingstown Bowl on Post Rd in North Kingstown. Admission is just $10 per person!

*Keep Calm and Get Your Country On" is the theme of our next dance! It will be happening on Saturday, April 30, at Metcalf and is also open to all students PreK to Grade 6 with an adult of their choice. Just $10 per family!

*Family Science Expo at URI:

Save the date for some hands-on family fun investigating science! Saturday April 30th URI’s GEMS-Net project is hosting a Family Science Expo at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island's Kingston campus from 10 AM to 2 PM. GEMS-Net partners with our schools, and others around the state, to help teachers bring cutting edge science education to all classrooms. Dig in with hands-on investigations from our kindergarten through 8th grade science curriculum. Let your children lead the way- teaching you what they know and exploring what’s to come! Visit the inflatable planetarium, get up close to hissing cockroaches, design and build the tallest tower and connect with URI students to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors offered at URI. The Family Science Expo offers free admission and parking, and concessions will be open. We hope you'll save the date to explore with us!

Madeline Greene won 

The Daughters of the American  Revolution History Contest!

Madeline is the 6th grade winner of the American History Essay contest for the General Nathanael Greene-Pettaquamscutt Chapter of the DAR. This year's theme was, "A Colonial Family's Reaction to the Stamp Act." Madeline now moves on to the regional competition!

I chatted with Madeline about this experience and how it feels to be a published and celebrated writer.  This is what she had to share...

It feels awesome! I can't believe I won. I'm very proud of myself! 

The best part was learning about the Stamp Act and how it led to the American Revolution. The hardest part was eliminating words to stay within the 1000 word limit.

I love history and I'm very thankful to my mom and my grandmother for their support!

Good Luck in the regional competition, Madeline!  You make us PROUD!!

Metcalf School is #Dstrong!!!

Today the Metcalf students, faculty, and staff all joined together to help Dorian achieve his goal and become famous! 

We have some famous artists here at Metcalf!  Daniel O'Neill, Kaia Bennett, and Sophia Kelly recently displayed this wonderful artwork at the 27th Children's Art Exhibition at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield!  Very impressive, you make us proud! 

  

                              

 

Exciting reading and writing collaboration was happening in Mrs. D'Amico's classroom today. Mrs. Allen and her students joined their 3rd grade friends to share some terrific writing projects. Next time the D'Amico's will share their writing with their 5th grade friends! Great Job!

  

Here's a February Vacation Challenge for my Metcalf friends!  Stay warm enjoying a good book to tell me about when we return, or, bundle up to have fun playing outside in the snow! Have mom or dad take pictures of you doing one or both and bring them to school when we return on the 22nd.  You can also email pictures to me. We're going to use these photos to transform our lobby bulletin boards into two delightful winter scenes featuring all of YOU!!  Faculty and staff too!!  :)

January News!

WOW...we have some STUPENDOUS SPELLERS at Metcalf School!!

Congratulations to our Metcalf Scripps Spelling Bee winners!  We had a terrific group of students from grades 4-6 that qualified for the EWG District Spelling Bee which took place on Tuesday, January 19th.  The pressure was on but each these children shined and represented their grade level and classroom with pride.

Jack Carroll, grade 5, was our district winner!  He will represent EWG at the state Scripps Spelling Bee which will take place on Saturday, March 5th at Lincoln High School. Let’s give a huge congratulations to Jack and wish him good luck as he moves onto the next phase of the spelling competition!  Congratulations also goes to Kailey Brooks, grade 5, who is our district runner-up.  Awesome job!!  Kailey will step in should Jack be unable to attend the State Spelling Bee for any reason.

PTA News

Don’t miss Family Bingo this Sunday from 1:00-3:00 at Metcalf School. It is only $5 per family and yes, we take walk-ins!

Mark your calendars for a Family Bowling event on April 3rd and Sweetheart Dance on April 30th. These events are for both boys and girls this year so make sure you get your dancing AND bowling shoes all shined up! More information on both events will be coming soon.

The BJ's Fundraiser is wrapping up on Friday, February 5th. It is open to anyone so please share the information with friends and family outside EWG as well. For more information, email ewgpta@yahoo.com.

I would like to welcome you back after what I hope was a restful and exciting winter break spent with family and friends! I am excited about what lies ahead in 2016 and look forward to working together in our efforts to be the best we can be in EWG! I can't believe the halfway point to our school year is just around the corner. Time certainly does fly by when having fun! This is the perfect time of year to revisit some school routines, provide important reminders, and start fresh with our New Year resolutions. With that in mind, please review the following reminders and requests.

• All students must be dressed appropriately for the weather when they come to school. Winter coats, hats, mittens/gloves, boots, and snow pants (when we have snow) are a must. Please do not allow your child to come to school without these items, or dressed in shorts or short sleeved shirts, during the winter months. We go outside for recess every day if at all possible, as well as routinely practice fire and safety drills during the cold weather, not to mention the possibility of a real emergency which would require us to be outside for an extended period of time. So, please double check that your child is dressed for winter before they walk out to the bus each morning. Thank you.
• Please note that the following items are not allowed in school: chewing gum, toys (including trading cards), electronics, drinks for their desks other than water (flavored coffees, hot chocolates, and sweetened drinks present problems if brought to school by students).
• Student Drop-off Time is 8:22 to 8:37.  Please go down and park in the lot facing the sidewalk if arriving prior to 8:22 and then allow your child to walk up the sidewalk to the crosswalk.  If arriving after 8:37, please park and walk your child to the main entrance door by the office.
• Parents may not enter the building at the pick-up door per our safety protocols.

January is a month of reflections and new beginnings. Let's join together to celebrate learning, reflect on the growth and begin to imagine how far we can go when we set our expectations high and plan a path to reach them. 

We can accomplish anything, and everything, when working together!

Enjoying Metcalf's First Annual Ugly Sweater Day!

Students, faculty, and staff all enjoyed taking part in Metcalf's Ugly Sweater Contest on Friday.  This added to the fun and excitement of the season as we approached the holiday break.  What fun we had!

 

  Mrs. Lavoie's class had their very own tree farm!  

Look at these fabulous decorations made from scratch.  The children had so much fun using their creativity to get into the holiday spirit!

Mrs. Gaumond's class created beautiful centerpieces with the help of some Metcalf moms!  

They also traveled to Shady Acres Nursing Home to spread some holiday cheer and gave a heartwarming performance incorporating sign language.

Holiday Bazaar and Much More!

This Saturday, Dec. 5th, don't miss the annual EWG Holiday Bazaar at Metcalf Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Nearly 70 vendors are on hand to sell their unique gift items, including some of our own EWG teachers, staff and students!  Professional Santa photos are available, as well as a full kitchen cafe, baked goods, children's shopping area (all items $5 or less!), penny social, and a 50/50 raffle, this year to benefit a couple of staff members who are bravely battling cancer.  This is a great community event that supports a lot of small businesses as well as our three elementary schools...please join us!

PARCC FORUM

We will be holding a parent forum on Wednesday, Dec. 9th at 6:00 at Metcalf to review PARCC results and answer questions.  I hope to see you there!

We will be doing a WINTER DRIVE for children in need at McAuley Village.  

Please send in  COATS (can be gently used by clean), SOCKS (new only), and UNDERWEAR (new only).  Sizes 2T to children's 12 please.  

We will be collecting items until Dec. 16th when they will be delivered to McAuley Village.

FOOD, HAT, & MITTEN DRIVE RESULTS!

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who donated to our Metcalf Food, Hat, & Mitten Drive. As you may have heard, after tallying our final count, Metcalf Mustangs collected an outstanding 1,174 items!  Grade 4 did an amazing job collecting 445 items, and on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving this grade level enjoyed an extra recess!  

Thank you again for your generous support for our community.

DUCK STAMP WINNERS ON DISPLAY:  Save the Date!

As you may know, it is great artistic tradition in EWG that all students can enter the Federal Junior Duck Stamp competition if they so choose.  We are excited to announce that the winning entries from last school year have finished their gallery tour throughout the state, and as a "grand finale" all winning entries from K-12 students in EWG will be on display in the Jr./Sr. High School Library on Thursday, 12/17 from 6-7 p.m. before the high school's holiday concert.  All students will receive their winning entries in school on the following Monday, Dec. 21.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. LaFrenaye at sharon_lafrenaye@ewg.k12.ri.us or at (401)397-3375.
